Overview
Sucrose and maltose are both carbohydrates, and more specifically, are both sugars. Sucrose is the chemical name for table sugar, while maltose is more commonly known as malt sugar. They are both common sweetening agents in foods, and you can use either of them to provide for cellular energy needs.
Sucrose
Sucrose is a disaccharide sugar, meaning it's made up of two smaller sugar units called monosaccharides. It has the chemical formula C12H22O11, making it a relatively small carbohydrate. The specific monosaccharides that comprise sucrose are glucose and fructose. Glucose is the most common of the monosaccharides and is one of the most common molecules in the natural world as well. Maltose
Like sucrose, maltose is a disaccharide. It has the same chemical formula as sucrose, but its structure is somewhat different. Unlike sucrose, maltose consists of two glucose units -- and doesn't contain any fructose. Structurally, maltose is quite similar to starch, RIFT Platinum which is also made up exclusively of glucose monosaccharides. Maltose, however, is a much smaller molecule than starch; starch is a polysaccharide, and consists of many glucose units chemically bonded together.
Sweetness
One of the most familiar aspects of sugars in the diet is that they taste sweet. The glucose and fructose monosaccharides have very different sweetness levels, as fructose binds much more tightly to sweetness receptors in the mouth than glucose. Consequently, rift gold sucrose has an intermediate sweetness; it's less sweet than fructose, but sweeter than glucose. Maltose, as it's made of pure glucose, is only about half as sweet as sucrose.
Use In The Body
